Maritime

The nineteenth century saw the change from sail to steam, both for ocean-going vessels and on a smaller scale along the rivers. This resulted in shorter journey times, and lessened the dependence on the weather, benefiting both passenger and cargo shipping.

The pages in this section includes two histories with maritime interest: the barque Eudora in the 1830s to 1849, and the stern wheeler Lot Whitcomb on the Columbia River, Oregon, in the 1850s.

Note: There is a passenger list for the 1835 London–Tasmania voyage of the Charles Kerr in the History > Names section of our site.
