in the major UK and US archives and repositories, combined with many
years writing experience.
We can offer services in researching and writing accounts of local
history, making resources available, and producing display material.
How can we can help you?
Whether you need background information on a particular subject, or want
to find out about the history of an individual location or a whole area, we can
find the information you need and present it in a way that fits your needs. For
example:
- Need interpretive material? We can research
and produce display material for your attraction.
- Producing a promotion? We can write pieces
that provide local colour or a heritage flavour for your newsletter, magazine,
brochure or catalogue.
- Celebrating an event? We can write a company
history, research the events leading up to an anniversary, or design a
commemorative certificate or booklet.
- Need records transcribed? We can provide
transcription and digitisation of records and other sources, and can produce
abstracts or indexes.
- Interested in a building? We can research the
background to a site, office building or house to tell the story of its former
use or occupants.

Heuristics Ltd provides an individual, personal service. We carry out
only the work you have requested and pursue only those lines of enquiry you
have agreed to within the budget you have set. We let you know when milestones
have been reached and maintain a dialogue with you, so you can take advantage
of new avenues of exploration.
We can provide information in the format most suited to your needs, for
example:
- Written accounts We can write in a style
suitable for your audience, whether a light-hearted background piece or an
in-depth scholarly article.
- Supporting evidence We can obtain copies from
the relevant archives of maps, old illustrations, wills and similar evidence.
- Transcription or digitisation If you own
historical data or documents, we can transcribe or digitise the records, for
example so you can preserve the originals and make the information in them
available to a wider audience.
- File formats We can produce computer files in
your required format, e.g. Excel or other spreadsheet, Word, RTF, HTML or
PDF.
When you contact us with your history quest:
- We analyse the information you give us to ascertain the best
approaches to take, then draw up a proposal which may offer a variety of
services.
- Alternatively, you can commission us to carry out specific research
on your behalf. We provide you with an estimate for the work you have
requested.
- Once you have confirmed the work required, we keep you informed on
progress and make further suggestions if there are new leads to follow.
